The village was set up in 1905 by an influential Dutch Reform Minister JJ Marquard. He was assisted by the ,then, Commandant of the Orange Free State, Christoffel Cornelis Froneman.
Established on the farm Varschfontein,Marquard attained municipal status in the same year.
The main activity in the district is agriculture and the area is renowned for a good climate. Hot in summer and cold in winter it is very suitable for the production of maize, wheat,potatoes,soya and the like. Excellent cattle country has given Marquard one of the biggest beef producers in South Africa, Sparta Beef .. An industry leader it has been in operation since 1965 Other sizeable producers are also very successful beef and lamb producers.
Marquard is located approximately one and a half hours north east of the city of Bloemfontein and 45 kilometres south-west of Senekal.
